Intercultural Nursing, Inc. & Northeastern University (Trip to the Dominican Republic, Spring 2009)Intercultural Nursing, Inc (INI) is a non-profit charitable organization founded in 1985. It provides an opportunity for nurses and other healthcare professionals to live and work with the sick and poor in the lesser developed Caribbean nations of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The experience provides growth in many areas including personal, professional and spiritual parts of the being. It is a two or three week program that is offered three times a year in January, May, and November. INI first began working in Haiti due to the great need. Health care professionals work alongside missionaries in a variety of settings. In 1988, INI was invited to the Dominican Republic. In the DR healthcare professionals work with other volunteers as well as the Dominican Department of Health. While providing hands-on care at various clinical sites, healthcare professionals also work with Dominican nurses and health promoters sharing ideas and information. A group of students and faculty members from Northeastern University and volunteer nurse practitioners from the Boston community travel to the DR yearly in the spring to provide healthcare.
